Professional development

Academic Year 18/19

Became a Contributor to Gef the Mongoose

(2019)

As I am interested in working within arts publishing, I have started writing articles for an Isle of Man based company called 'Gef the Mongoose'. My aim is to build up a portfolio of writing about subjects I am interested in exploring with art. I am aware a lot of the image making jobs for newspapers require you to have a body of published  writing work along with your art portfolio, so this will help me build up a body of writing work. Also from this experience I am able to work with an editor and become better at creative writing.

Photographer for Fine Art Auction + Photographs Published.

(February 2019)

I was approached by the organiser Lauren Page to photograph the DMU Fine Art Auction, Initially I was filled with a sense of dread as the lighting where I would be shooting is quite varied and would require much attention throughout the night which might have took my focus from the actual event. This was a challenge on the night, but taught me that I need to trust that I know how to use a camera to suit the lighting and this experience actually led to more interesting outcomes. The images had varied lighting and shadows which made the scene look organic and showed the passing of time. The colours in the artworks I was photographing were bright and contrasted with the sometimes dark backgrounds. These images have been passed on to a writer for the Leicestershire Press blog.

My Work shown in BA Fine Art exhibition,

The Gallery DMU,

(February 2019).

From this experience I was able to have an insight into what it takes to put a show together in a group. I have since become interested in curation and researching it as part of my creative process. The dynamic of being in a group show meant we had to really analyse the work to make sure the placement, lighting, and flow of the layout was relevant to each work.

 Cinematographer

BA Fine Art Exhibition Private Viewing Opening Night,

(February 2019).

I was asked to document the private viewing event, through film. On the night I found it took along time to document all of the work, but I enjoyed being able to get close up shots and using the light in film to show the work on a personal scale. Later I compiled the footage to create a short film for next years third years to refer to.

Part of the Fine Art in New York DMU Global Trip to the UN Conference

- Join Together, Article 16.

(January 2019).

I have always been interested in taking part in a political conference in one form or another. This was a great experience to understand the ways I can be engaged in current projects within my everyday life. This conference also sparked my interest in the use of political language, which has been my driving force of the project 'Be Subjected To'.

Health and Safety Officer,

DMU Photography Society + St Johns Ambulance First Aid Qualification,

(September 2018 – Ongoing).

Being part of a social committee has motivated me to work on my leadership skills and take on responsibly. I have enjoyed having meeting to plan events and risk assessing these events. As Heath and Safety it has been my job to build a trusting relationship with the members and help students onto further medical or counselling help. This has also built my trust in being able to cope with crisis.

Western Fashion Shoot - Charlie Dickinson.

In collaboration with Manx designers and Artists

(August 2018).

During the summer months I was able to focus on developing my crochet and design skills. I was asked to join a network of artists on the Isle of Man, I put forward a collection of Bohemian clothing which was used in a western theme photo shoot. This was my first experience being a part of a fashion shoot, Inspiring me to branch out and think about other ways I could brand my work other than fine art alone.

Etsy Shop + Commissions,

(July 2018 – Ongoing).

Initially I started using Etsy to have a specific list of examples for commissions, also a platform to sell commissions through. I really enjoyed developing my crochet and knitting skills and making patterns made to order and personalised. I really enjoyed the process of sourcing wool and building a mental catalogue of patterns. This sparked my fascination with learning and exploring craft processes in the project 'Stitch'.

Director of Dance Short Film - 'Touch'.

Screened at DMU University Dance Festival 2018,

Part of The DMU Festival Of Creativity.

(July 2018)

I was asked by a dancer to direct a short film she was making and performing in. I found the communication of this quite difficult as I wasn't sure how to direct dance, I have previously taken part in a dance photo shoot so I referred back to my method then. I found it quite fun to learn the words and movements which best explained how I wanted her to move around the camera. This was later screened at the universities dance festival, which was quite surreal and allowed me to receive feedback from other dancers who were interested in getting involved with film making.
